The Two Fridas
Two Fridas sit hand in hand, their hearts exposed and joined by a single vein. She painted it the year she and Diego Rivera divorced — one of her largest works and one of her most personal.
Inspired: “Te amo más que mi propia piel” — the anatomical heart, worn as a love letter.
Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird
Butterflies and blossoms crown her head while a necklace of thorns holds a hummingbird — a Mexican symbol of luck in love. Flowers were never decoration for Frida: they were armor.
Inspired: the flower crown and the color of her portraits.
The Broken Column
Painted after spinal surgery left her in a steel corset. Her body is split open, nails cover her skin — and still she looks straight at us. Pain, faced head-on.

A bus crash in Mexico City changes her life. Bedridden, she starts to paint.

Frida & Diego
She marries muralist Diego Rivera — a love story told in letters and paintings.

New York
Her first solo exhibition opens at the Julien Levy Gallery.

Paris & the Louvre
The Louvre acquires The Frame. She paints The Two Fridas.
- 1944
The Broken Column
Painted after spinal surgery, in a steel corset.

Her only solo show in Mexico
Too ill to walk, she arrives at the opening in her own four-poster bed.

“Viva la Vida”
She signs her last still life with those words. She dies July 13 at La Casa Azul.
